I've just moved my website (yay!), and when I did, I got myself a new forum. That forum is a lot more flexible than the old one, and I decided to post new there instead of on this blog.

If you register on the forum, it's easy to see the new posts across all the different subforums, so it's easier to keep up with the news. And it's easier for me, since there's just one place to keep up with and moderate. And I also get to have other moderators.

WANT TO BE IN THE MOVIES?
Movie-makers are headed back to the mountains of Western North Carolina in search of stars for the silver screen.
There will be an open casting call from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 11 at Harrah's Cherokee Casino. Casting representatives are interested in American Indian men, women and children, especially American Indian men ages 18 to 40 and American Indian women 16 to 22 years old. They're also looking for American Indian dancers and drummers.
Filming starts in July, and the movie will be shot in the Williamsburg, Va., area. If you go, bring a recent photo of yourself.

Red Mother is a work-in-progress; an exploration loosely based on the œideaof Brecht™s Mother Courage. Red Mother is about all the women who are faced with the greatest challenges; the women who are not credited and are often maligned for their convictions but who are active in their own survival and the survival of their children. It charts this struggle for survival of the woman and of the race, and maps the persistence of generational memory.

Wichita, KS -- Rodrick Pocowatchit, an award-winning filmmaker from Kansas, will screen his first feature-length film Dancing on the Moon at the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival (NYIIFVF) at 4:15 p.m. Sunday, April 25th at the Village East Cinemas, 181 2nd Avenue (at 12th Street) in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. Tickets are $10, available at www.ticketweb.com or at the theater. Advance sales are encouraged.
The film is currently on a successful tour of film festivals, including screenings in such high-profile cities as Washington, D.C., San Francisco and Minneapolis/St. Paul, as well as in such states as Kansas, Oklahoma, North Dakota, South Dakota, Arizona and internationally in Montreal, Canada. Pocowatchit and Dancing on the Moon are featured in the current issue of Indie Slate magazine, available nationwide.

Pocowatchit, a member of the Pawnee, Shawnee and Comanche tribes, originally developed Dancing on the Moon with the assistance of the Sundance Institute, through its Native Initiative program and screenwriting labs. Featuring a cast of local Kansas actors, Dancing on the Moon is the compelling story of Dean, Joey and Mark, three Native American friends who get stranded on the road to a powwow. The events that ensue result in life-changing events for each of them: Grappling with grief, Dean struggles to reconnect with the traditional dances he once loved. The quintessential screw-up with a big heart, Joey must learn to rely on his own strengths. And always the hothead, Mark must confront his own identity. Along the way, they meet up with a wayward party girl, encounter small-minded store owners and get into a singing contest. But only when tragedy strikes does Dean seek solace where he truly feels at home: The powwow world.
"Dancing on the Moon celebrates the human spirit," Pocowatchit said. "It shows Native people living in the modern world just like everyone else, who somehow find the power to believe in themselves and take chances. I am deeply excited to screen our film in New York City."
At the American Indian Film Festival in San Francisco last November, Pocowatchit received the festival’s Horizon Award, a special jury prize recognizing up-and-coming talent. He also was a nominee for Best Supporting Actor. Dancing on the Moon also was nominated for three American Indian L.A. Film and TV Awards, including Best Motion Picture, in company with such films as Whale Rider and Ron Howard’s The Missing. Cast member Guy Ray Pocowatchit (Rod’s brother) was named Best Actor in A Film at the awards, announced at a press conference last month in Hollywood.
NYIIFVF runs April 22-May 2 and offers a diverse range of shorts, features, documentaries and animations from all around the world. In addition to the screenings, the festival hosts special events including industry panels and after-parties for participating artists, delegates, members of the press and the viewing public.

'Nate And The Colonel' Nominated For Best Picture By L.A.'s NAFC

The Paul Winters production of“Nate And The Colonel” has been nominated for the best film of the year by the Los Angeles Native American Film Committee The film produced by Canyon Press and Ace Entertainment premiered February 26th in Santa Monica at the Lemmele Theatre.

The setting is 1865 and the Civil War is over. Former slave, Nate Washington and his boyhood friend, Confederate Colonel Ben Loftin head West to escape a Southern homeland torn by war and strife. On the Western Plains they encounter a band of Chippewa Indians who will forever change their lives. Along their the Westward route they must deal with a renegade band of Union Cavalry with a score to settle.

The film was written and directed by Winters. Carlos Milano is the producer. Nico Ross is Nate; Winters is Colonel Loftin; and Milano is Major J.T. Haskell. Also in the cast are Mark S. Brien, Hunting Thunder; Al Harrington, Standing Elk; Lee Whitestar, Offers The Pipe; Victoria Regina, Birdfeather, David Midthunder as Kills The Enemy; and Kansas Caradine, Rain Basket.

Many of the cast were featured in Winters first film “Red Blood”(a.k.a. The Homecoming of Jimmy Whitecloud) which is now on video and available at Hollywood Video Stores.

The group will hold a press conference this coming Friday, March 5th. 2 p.m. at the Burbank Holiday Inn.

Native American Film Festival in Palm Springs

The NAFF at the Camelot Theatre in Palm Springs, CA is about ten times
bigger than last year and is shaping up to be one of the major Native
film fests in the country. I just learned that Adam Beach will also be
here for the March 11th opening night reception and screening of Thief
of Time. Rick Schroeder's Black Cloud is premiering and he and Eddie
Spears are attending. Representatives of the Film & Video division of
the National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Inst, tribal
and civic leaders, and many others will be in attendance.

A good discussion about Flash

As many of you know, I simply refuse to link to sites with only flash
content. Even if there's some text I'll refuse to link to it, if the
plain text doesn't include the most important information - such as
contact info and screening times for movies for instance.

I've come to that rule because I've felt that not everybody is willing
or able to play flash movies, and will simply skip flash only
websites.

I've found confirmation that it's a widely held opinion. Here's a
discussion I found where they're talking about trends as related to
flash and search engines. This is fairly technical, so skip this
unless you're willing to read technical babble.

The first annual "American Indian LA Film and TV Awards" is to honor those actors and actresses who've found work in Independent Films and on Network Television. 2003 has been a great year for Indigenous performers and we want to acknowledge them where they otherwise would not be in mainstream Hollywood.

Diversity has been a huge issue for Native performers in the Entertainment Industry. We would like to celebrate the support from the Major Film Studios, Cable and Network Television through their diversity initiatives.

Independent Films will receive our most critical support. Many of these nominated films are not seen on Indian Reservations across the United States. The American Indian audience enjoys Film just like anybody else and they deserve to see these little known Independent films.
These nominations were chosen more on a mainstream level similar to the Golden Globe Awards (Foreign Press Association). Actress Sheila Tousey has the most individual nominations (5). The ABC Mini-Series "Dreamkeeper" has the most nominations for TV (11). "On The Corner" and "Whale Rider" tie in nominations for a Motion Picture (4). "The Missing" follows close behind with (3). A special honorary award will go to Crystal Lightning who portrayed Iraq War Hero Lori Piestewa in the NBC movie "Saving Jessica Lynch." Crystal is also nominated in the supporting actress category for TV.

ABC AND HALLMARK ENTERTAINMENT'S "DREAMKEEPER" TOPS THE LIST OF SPECIAL TRUSTEE AWARDS AT THE FIRST AMERICANS IN THE ARTS 12TH ANNUAL AWARDS PRESENTATION

BEVERLY HILLS: The first honorees have been named for the 12th Annual First Americans in the Arts Award Presentation and Dinner. This yearly tribute to the American Indian entertainers will be MC'd by actor and artist Michael Horse on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

ABC and Hallmark Entertainment will be honored with the Trustee Award for the mini-series "Dreamkeeper." John Fusco, writer of the mini-series," will also be honored with the Humanitarian Award.

FAITA's trustees will honor other special individuals or organizations for their contributions to the Native Performing Arts Community. Among these awardees include renowned author Tony Hillerman, Trustee Award; KTNN Navajo Radio, the Will Sampson Memorial Award; Monty Bass, Technical Award; Henry Kingi Jr, Stunt Award; and Norman Howell, Stunt/Humanitarian Award.

This event will mark the 12th Anniversary for First Americans in the Arts, a non-profit dedicated to celebrating the achievements of Native Americans in the entertainment industry. The Awards are also designed to enlist the support and recognition of the television, film, theater and music industry, and to raise money for a scholarship fund for American Indian students of the Performing Arts.

2004 Urban Filmmakers Conference Set for Santa Barbara

Los Angeles, CA - 23 November 2003 - The Rockstone Foundation, producers
of the hugely successful Urban-American Filmmakers Workshop (UAFW),
announced today the launch of its first annual Urban Filmmakers Conference
(UFC) and Best of the Best Film Festival (BBFF) and Screenplay Competition
to take place Wednesday, September 29 through Sunday, October 3, 2004 in
Santa Barbara, California.

After producing the UAFW for the past two years, we found that there is
an incredible appetite for a more comprehensive format for film training,
networking and support amongst filmmakers of color. The UFC was created
to help fill this void, says H.M. Coakley, Executive Director of the
Rockstone Foundation.

The conference boasts five days of screenings, workshops, networking
receptions, parties, panel discussions, and a film expo. The UFC
kicks-off with a Gala Reception and a Special Premiere Screening of a
studio film. There will be extensive workshops in acting, screenwriting,
directing and producing as well as panel discussions hosted by the
industry's top filmmakers and executives. The conference also offers
technical workshops in cinematography, digital filmmaking and sound
design.

A highlight of the conference will be the Best of the Best Film Festival,
which will provide a select group of urban filmmakers with a unique
opportunity to have their screenplay, feature film or short exposed to
potential buyers, talent representatives and conference attendees. The
BBFF is unique in that, rather than programming many entries of varying
quality, a panel of celebrity judges will select a limited number of the
best works from Asian American, African-American, Latino and Native
American filmmakers nationwide. We believe this additional 'weeding out'
process gives our filmmakers a better than average chance of having their
work seen by the appropriate people, adds Coakley.

The UFC will also host an invitation-only Executive Luncheon for BBFF
filmmakers, UFC guest speakers and key industry executives. A high-level
studio executive will deliver the luncheon s Keynote Address. There will
be something there for everyone, says Coakley.

The conference wraps up with the celebrity hosted Urban Filmmaker Awards
(UFA) and Keynote Address. Sponsor supported cash, product and service
awards will be given for Best Feature, Best Short, Best Audience Supported
Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Direction, Best Screenplay and a
special award -- UFA Appreciation Award -- given to an accomplished
filmmaker of color.

The Urban Filmmakers Conference and Urban-American Filmmakers Workshop are

SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival is now accepting
entries for its second annual Festival. SILVERDOCS was created through a
unique alliance between AFI and the Discovery Channel to support, honor
and showcase documentaries that exhibit a personal cinematic vision and
celebrate the spirit of independent filmmaking.

SILVERDOCS will present more than 70 films from around the world from June
16 - 20, 2004. The Festival will be held at AFI Silver Theatre and
Cultural Center, a restored 1938 art deco theatre complex.

The Washington, DC, area is home to SILVERDOCS as well as the most
concentrated base of international policymakers, diplomats, producing
organizations, world journalists, issue experts and activists on the
planet. The AFI Silver's location puts SILVERDOCS in a unique position to
bring together diverse and informed audiences to explore the art and craft
of the documentary form and to examine the content revealed by nonfiction
films.

"As we launch our 2004 Call for Entries, we look forward to searching the
globe for the most exciting new documentaries and developing unique

HALLMARK'S DREAMKEEPER SWEEPS AMERICAN INDIAN MOTION PICTURE AWARDS

The Hallmark Entertainment-ABC Television Network mini-series
DREAMKEEPER swept the 28th annual American Indian Film Festival's
American Indian Motion Picture Awards in San Francisco on Sat. Nov.
8, 2003 in San Francisco, capturing four top honors. Now Native
America - the film's litmus-test and toughest critical demographic -
issues its highest praise for the epic odyssey of a Lakota grandfather's
final storytelling.

"It's the first time in my career - which spans 40 years - that I
have sat through something, that I was a part of, all the way," said
August Schellenberg, whose captivating portrayal of Dreamkeeper Pete
Chasing Horse earned AIFF's Best Actor Award. "I can't stand to watch
myself, but this film has inspired me so much because of the writing, the
direction and the incredible cast. It's always an honor to win an award,
but to win such a prestigious award is a 'feather in my bonnet.' [American
Indian Film Festival director] Michael Smith has done a wonderful job with
the festival. He's a wonderful man." A near capacity crowd filled the
Palace of Fine Arts Theater, where popular actors and AIFF-winners Michael
Horse, Elaine Miles and Gary Farmer joined longtime festival emcee Susan
Masten and Smith as co-host of the awards ceremony. The evening began with
a special memorial tribute to Coast Miwok-Kashaya Pomo storyteller Lanny
Pinola, whose sudden death last April created a painful void at the
American Indian Film Festival, where for the past decade Pinola provided
traditional prayer songs, always asking for a special blessing on the
veterans. Fiancee Susie Moore and clan offered an especially poignant
prayer song in his memory. Evoking the reverence of angels, Yakama tribal
member Fawn Lily Brown and her daughters Morningstorm and Mistyeve,
dressed in traditional Indian outfit, interpreted a musical rendition of
"Amazing Grace," with the fluid movement using Native sign language.

A grateful Eddie Spears accepted the Best Supporting Actor Award for his
role in DREAMKEEPER. The Lakota actor reflected on that magical moment
when he heard his name called. "It was so humbling to receive that award,"
Spears said, "and the fact that my very first award came from the Native
people made it 10 times more special. To receive something from your own
people, it gives you that sense of pride. For all the awards that
DREAMKEEPER got, for all the hard work, it paid off. It was a film that's
authentic to Native Americans - it didn't have stereotypes in it. It was
just humbling to be at the festival and to receive the award. I'm glad
everybody enjoyed that film." The Best Actress Award went to Alex Rice for
her role as Janet Pete in Coyote Waits, while Delanna Studi's turn as
Talks a Lot in DREAMKEEPER earned her the award for Best Supporting
Actress. A pair of Horizon Awards were presented to newcomer Rodrick
Pocowatchit [Dancing on the Moon], and to 17-year-old
actress-screenwriter-recording artist Sage, whose dual roles in
DREAMKEEPER is a major coup on an already impressive resume.

In the documentary categories, veteran Native filmmaker Alanis
Obomsawin's Is the Crown at War With Us? earned the Best Documentary
Feature Film Award, and the Best Documentary Short Award went to World of
American Indian Dance, directed by Randy Martin. Tru Rez Crew's I'm a
Lucky One won for Best Music Video, director Randy Redroad's Moccasin
Flats won the Best Live Short award, while filmmaker Gary Robinson won the
Best Industrial Film Award for Pathways to Tomorrow. Cree comedian Don
Burnstick performed at the American Indian Motion Picture Awards, then
picked up the award for Best Public Service Video for the biographical Don
Burnstick: You Might Be a Redskin.

American Indian Film Festival Director Michael Smith presented the
festival's highest honor, the Eagle Spirit Award, to Mohican
recording artist Bill Miller, who headlined the awards ceremony.
Approaching his third decade of performing, this was Miller's first
appearance at AIFF. The American Indian Motion Picture Awards also
featured live entertainment by First Nations triple-threat Tamara
Podemski, classical musicians Cindy Minkler and Swil Kanim, plus
Aboriginal recording artists Eagle & Hawk.

The spotlight remained on DREAMKEEPER, which also won the award for
Best Film. From Eagle Boy's vision quest [Lakota] and the Akwesasne
Mohawk's Thunder Beings, to the stories of the Kiowa, Pawnee and
Cheyenne, DREAMKEEPER is truly a masterpiece, masterfully written by John
Fusco [Thunderheart, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron], directed by Steve
Barron and produced by Robert Halmi Sr. [Arabian Nights, Merlin] and
Robert Halmi Jr. [Dinotopia, Frankenstein]. Shot on location in Alberta,
Canada, Pine Ridge, South Dakota and Arizona and New Mexico, DREAMKEEPER's
historical accuracy and cultural integrity are steadfastly maintained,
with exquisite cinematography ranging from the resplendent tone of an
Edward S. Curtis photogravure, to the muted pastels of a watercolor
painting, to the contemporary, true-to-life colors of the elder and his
grandson's desert trek. Co-stars Gary Farmer, John Trudell, Alex Rice and
Michael Greyeyes were also in attendance.

The American Indian Film Festival continues through Thurs., Nov. 13
at the UA Galaxy Theaters [Sutter at Van Ness], with matinee and
evening show times. At 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Galaxy, AIFF will
screen its Closing Night Films: the documentary Spirit of the Game,
followed by the unforgettable Cowboys & Indians: The Killing of J.J.
Harper, starring award-winning actors Adam Beach, Eric Schweig and Gordon
Tootoosis. The CBC-Aboriginal Peoples Television Network collaboration is
based on the true story of Manitoba leader John Joseph Harper, who was
fatally shot by Winnipeg Police Constable Robert Cross. In the conspiracy
and cover-up that ensued, Inspector Ken Dowson committed suicide the same
day he was to testify in the case, which divided the city and became the
catalyst for the establishment of the Manitoba Aboriginal Justice Inquiry.
This compelling feature film, produced by Eric Jordan and Jeremy Torrie,
was directed by Norma Bailey.

CREATIVE CAPITAL GRANTS AVAILABLE IN MARCH 2004
Arts foundation will award up to 40 grants in the fields of visual arts and film/video

NEW YORK, NY (November 3, 2003) In the spring of 2004, Creative Capital Foundation will accept proposals for its 200405 grant cycle supporting work in the visual arts and film/video. Grants for performing arts and emerging fields will be available in 2005. The nonprofit arts organization has implemented a new application process: to apply for a grant, artists must first submit an Inquiry Form, which will be available February 16, 2004 on the foundation¹s website, www.creative-capital.org. The deadline for completed Inquiry Forms is March 15, 2004; those invited to apply will be notified in June 2004.

As in past grant rounds, funded projects will receive approximately $400,000 in initial grants, ranging from $5,000 to $20,000. In addition, grantees are eligible for follow-up support totaling $900,000 to $1 million in the form of advisory services and additional financial assistance.

Now in its fifth year, the New York-based foundation has awarded an estimated

Native Earth Performing Arts presents:
Tales of an Urban Indian
Written by and Starring Darrell Dennis, Directed by Herbie Barnes

Toronto, Ontario - Native Earth Performing Arts, Canada’s oldest and most successful professional Native theatre company, launches its 21st season with Tales of An Urban Indian. This heartbreaking and hilarious show, written and starring one of Canada’s most promising young writers, playwright-actor Darrell Dennis (Trickster of Third Avenue East) is sure to catapult this young talent to greatness. Tales is a one-man show following a young Native man, Simon Douglas, on his journey from the rez to the east side of Vancouver to self-respect. In May, Darrell presented Tales at the On the Verge Festival at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. This reading got the attention of the Western Canada Theatre Company, which picked up Tales for full production. Dennis' virtuoso performances have been the hit of audiences across the country.

Aside from writing and starring in this show, Darrell has recently been named one of Ken Gass’ Protégé Award Winners. He has been commissioned, along with four other emerging playwrights, to develop a manifesto on the future of Canadian theatre. He has also won a coveted position within Factory Theatre’s ScriptLab Program, where he will create and develop new work alongside some of Canada’s most popular new playwrights. Darrell is also back as the zany host on the third season of Bingo and a Movie on APTN, and continues making people laugh with his comedy troupe Tonto’s Nephews. Away from the world of entertaining, Darrell spends most of his time studying at the University of Toronto where he is on full scholarship completing a double-major Honors B.A in Aboriginal Studies and Literature.

Director Herbie Barnes has worked on plays such as Toronto At Dreamers Rock and The Boy in the Treehouse, and the film RepreZentin in Fort Chip. Herbie also teaches theatre courses and workshops at universities, Second City and Theatresports. As an actor, Herbie has worked on stages across Canada in plays such as The Hobbit, in films such as Hidden in America, Dance Me Outside, and in television series such as Due South and The Rez. Set and Costume design by Christine Plunkett, Lighting design by Michelle Ramsay (recipient of a 2003 Harold Award, 2003 Dora Award for Best Lighting) and original Sound and Music design by Cathy Nosaty (Dora Award nominee for outstanding musical direction).

A non-profit organization, Native Earth is dedicated to creating, developing and producing professional artistic expression of the Aboriginal experience in Canada through stage productions (theatre, dance and multi-disciplinary), new script development and internship.

I just saw the first part of Dreamkeeper.

I only have one thing to say: Start lining up some way to watch it when it comes to your area (ABC in the US, Hallmark in most of the world). Invite yourself to a friend's house if you don't have that channel, or get them to tape it for you!

Judging from the photos on the Hallmark site, it looked kind of bleak to me. But when I saw the final product, I was very impressed. The CGI effects and the whole production was really good.

BTW, I hardly recognized Delanna Studi today. There's no way I would have recognized her if I hadn't already seen Edge Of America. I recognized many of the others, but I'm sure I missed some. There were so many actors, I'm sure there are many uncredited ones that we would recognize if we saw captures from the video with names added.

(For those who don't already know, I'm in Norway, so my Hallmark schedule is different from those living in the US and Canada)

Following a lengthy illness it is with deep sadness to announce the passing of Manuel Candeleria aka Rino Thunder (Ute) on September 27, 2003 at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. A long-time resident of New York City, on the Lower East Side, Rino was one of the first successful contemporary Native American actors. Rino broke ground as a Native American playing many non-traditional and diverse roles in film, television and video and was especially popular in Europe where as an actor, he was specifically requested. As Rino's friends, we will miss him. Services will be arranged in NYC for peers, friends, and family. co-star of COYOTE WAITS and A THIEF OF TIME,
American MYSTERY! Specials on PBS

Actor Wes Studi arrived at the role of Lt. Joe Leaphorn, co-hero of Tony Hillerman's Navajo police thrillers on American MYSTERY!, with a reputation for scalping (Dances With Wolves), eviscerating (The Last of the Mohicans), and massacring (Geronimo) his adversaries. Now he's giving them the courteous Joe Friday treatment.
Hailed by the New York Daily News for his "smoldering performance" in Skinwalkers, the first of the Hillerman specials on MYSTERY!, Studi is now back in two new episodes: Coyote Waits (November 16 at 9pm) and A Thief of Time (spring 2004).
He recently talked about the series and his wide-ranging interests from his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Q: Were you familiar with Leaphorn and Officer Jim Chee before you started making these films?

A; I had read a couple of Tony Hillerman's books. In fact, the one that we did first, Skinwalkers, I read back in the eighties when it first came out.

Q: When you were approached about playing Leaphorn, did you think, "Oh yeah, I can see myself as Leaphorn?"

A: I had actually thought of myself more in the Chee role from a number of years ago. Back when they were casting for Dark Wind [a Hillerman-inspired movie released in 1991], Chee was the part I gravitated toward. Not now, because time has passed and I'm a bit older and I couldn't do the Chee character. But I was very happy to learn with the script for Skinwalkers that Leaphorn has been changed to reflect a different background. In the books he is a fellow who has been on the reservation the larger part of his life. With these scripts Joe has an urban upbringing and is therefore a different kind of guy.

Q: What is his relationship to Chee?

A: In Leaphorn's eyes Chee is overly reliant on his learning as a medicine man. But Joe is slowly beginning to accept the value of these traditional ways, mainly because a lot of the people he deals with on the Navajo reservation are of the same belief system as Chee. And Leaphorn knows that he's seen as an outsider and has to deal with that.

Q: You're a native speaker of Cherokee and have spoken various Indian languages in your films. Do you get to speak Navajo as Leaphorn?

A: To this point, I have not. I think it fits into Leaphorn's character that he doesn't. While his wife does speak Navajo, Joe was raised in an urban environment, particularly Phoenix. He doesn't have an open disdain for the fact that he's Navajo, it's just that it hasn't been that much a part of his real life.

Q: How does Leaphorn handle his immersion into Navajo culture?

A: Because he's an Indian, because he's Navajo, Leaphorn is easily accepted into that circle, simply because physically he appears to be an Indian. So it's incumbent upon him to be respectful of what goes on, whether it's something that he believes in or not. I think most Indians have this attitude. Going from tribe to tribe over the years I've found that it's just a matter of being respectful of other people's rituals and ceremonies. That's more or less expected of you because that's what you yourself would want to see from other Indians.

Q: Is it a sensitive issue with Navajos for you, a Cherokee, to be playing a member of their tribe?

A: It may be with some, but I find that most Indians agree that it's better to have another American Indian playing the part whether they're a member of the tribe or not.

Q: A few years ago you wrote and starred in a one-man show called Coyote Chews His Own Tale. Would this be the same coyote figure as in Coyote Waits?

A: Not exactly. In Coyote Waits coyote is related to the darker side of the figure of coyote. Coyote has dozens of personalities and dozens of uses as far as his myth goes. Coyote is not only present in Navajo stories; he's a trickster type of character in many other tribes' stories and belief systems as well.

Q: And how did he figure in Coyote Chews His Own Tale?

A: Coyote Chews His Own Tale was a collection of stories from different sources that relate aspects of coyote's character to how humans act today. You see people behaving like coyote all the time.

Q: What are your interests besides acting?

A: I'm in a six-piece band called Firecat of Discord. My wife Maura is our lead vocalist. I'm the bass player. We do mainly original music that four of us in the band write.

Q: And I understand that you're a sculptor?

A: I'm a carver.

Q: What's the difference?

A: Sculpting is quite a process of different techniques. Myself, I just carve stone. I started out carving pipes. Then I went into different kinds of figures-fanciful things, some that are almost monstrous looking but have a humorous edge to them. I'll give a character human arms that have an extra joint-things that are beyond our realm.

Q: And you've written a couple of children's books?

A: Yes, I did write two books: The Adventures of Billy Bean and More Adventures of Billy Bean. They were part of a bilingual education program designed to insert the Cherokee language and the Cherokee syllabary into stories for distribution in schools in the Cherokee area of Oklahoma.

Q: How alive is the Cherokee language? I know that some Indian languages are endangered.

A: I'd say it's about half alive. There are efforts being made to instill the use of Cherokee within families and schools in northeastern Oklahoma.

Q: Beyond your books, are you involved in this effort at all?

A: I work with a group here in Santa Fe called the Indigenous Language Institute, which is a clearinghouse for ideas and methods for teaching, maintaining, and encouraging the use of native languages. Indigenous languages around the world are suffering a time of loss right now. It's a worldwide epidemic. They say that every five days another language goes extinct.

Q: What films are you working on now?

A: Right now I'm starting a contemporary film called Cactus. It's a dark comedy like Texasville, which has a little bit to do with Indian casinos. I recently finished a film called Edge of America about an Indian girls' basketball team, and I have a very small part in The Alamo, which is opening in December.

Q: Who do you play in The Alamo?

A: I play a character called Chief Bowl. He was a Cherokee who was quite the traveler. He wound up in Texas long before the Trail of Tears brought the Cherokees to Oklahoma. He was more or less a mentor for Sam Houston, who was married into the Cherokees. I believe this is the first time Indians have showed up in an Alamo movie.

Q: Why haven't there been more films like Smoke Signals [1998, directed by Chris Eyre, director of Skinwalkers and A Thief of Time] that show the lives of Native Americans today?

A: That was a good film. Unfortunately, it wasn't the breakthrough film that was going to have more like it made. I think that Hollywood still likes the romantic image of the Indian on horseback with feathers flying in the wind. It's easier to sell.

Q: Do you have any favorite PBS shows?

A: I do enjoy Mr. and Mrs. "Bouquet" on Keeping Up Appearances. Also Helen Mirren on Prime Suspect, and Juliet Stevenson on MYSTERY! [Trial By Fire].

Q: Audiences best know you for your roles in Dances With Wolves, The Last of the Mohicans, and Geronimo. Are there lesser-known parts that you'd like to call our attention to?

A: Actually, I kind of liked my role in Mystery Men [1999]. It was a comedy about a bunch of people who thought they were superheroes. I was the Sphinx who came along to show them how to become superheroes. I liked that.

Q: What would be your dream role?

A: Maybe if Joe Leaphorn were to have some sort of emotional breakdown and go absolutely nuts and then come back from the brink-something with a huge arc to it in terms of development. That would be great!

Q: You'll have to talk to Tony Hillerman about that.

A: [Laughs] Yeah, I'll whisper in his ear next time I see him.

Got this in the mail today, and got permission to post anywhere:

I'm directing a music video for a new reality show where they take a
couple directors, a couple of bands - pair 'em up - give 'em limited crew,
budget and 5 days to see what they've got.

My resume is solid with two music videos currently on MTV (here and
abroad) as well as a contract with Nautica (fashion videos) and many
award-winning short films so while this project is a bit off-the-wall your
talent will be working with pros (or as the show says "hot new directors
just under the radar").

The sticky part there is no $ and we shoot Tuesday 10am - 8pm on Coney
Island, NYC. Not a lot of prep time.

If you have any actors, models and/or performers that need some quality
footage for their reel, resume and some air-time this will be helpful - if
not it probably won't be - feel free to call me if you'd like further

Looking for actors, performers and the likes for a music video this
Tuesday (10am-8pm) shooting on Coney Island for the new reality show
"Video Evolution". The video is directed by Geoff Ryan (Senses Fail, iiO)
and features the band "Dog Fashion Disco". The making of the video is
being sponsored by IFC and will be broadcast as part of the Video
Evolution series. We are in need of actors of all types from the beautiful
to the freakish for a "Grease" spoof. Featured roles for the "Sandi",
"Rizzo" and "Greasers" parts as well as extra and featured extra roles for
all interested. Send headshots for featured roles or just show up for
extra parts (all will be accepted - the more the merrier).

Due to short notice time is of the essence. Unfortunately, we can't offer
$, (I ain't getting paid either), but it is truly a great opportunity to
get yourself on national TV (which is why I'm doing it, shameless self
promotion). All actors & performers will be interviewed for the TV show as
well as receive a video copy of the music video and will be invited to the
premiere party on Oct. 22 hosted by IFC.

Toronto, September 22, 2003 - Native Earth Performing Arts launches its 2003/04 season with Weesageechak Begins To Dance XVI, Canada's longest running, best-known and well-loved festival of new plays and dances by Native artists from across Canada and the United States. From October 2 to October 5 at Tallulah's Cabaret, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, each of the seven selected works will be presented by a stellar cast of performers including Lorne Cardinal, Tamara Podemski, Cheri Maracle, Muriel Miguel, Valerie Buhagiar, Gail Maurice, Billy Merasty, Darrell Dennis, Michelle Latimer and more.

Native Earth Performing Arts is proud of the many plays and dance pieces that have been developed through this annual festival. Artistic Director Yvette Nolan notes "Weesageechak has always been about breaking new ground. It's exciting to head into our 21st season with such a strong slate of new works. All the pieces in this year's festival are very contemporary, all examining where Native people are in the 21st century."

A fusion of dance and theatre, The Place Between explores the legacy of broken flesh, searching spirits and the unfinished business between three generations of women. Chëyikwe Performance - Lisa C Ravensbergen and Michelle Olson - have been developing this story rooted in the mythical traditions of our Aboriginal cultures for the past two years. The Place Between will be presented at Firehall Arts Centre in Vancouver, BC in June 2004.

The internal stresses and conflicts in a small Metis community are exposed when one of its members brings home his city girlfriend. The Willows needs new blood if it is to survive, but can it survive exposure to outsiders?

Penny is excited to be back at the Weesageechak Festival where her full-length play, Wawatay, took its first breath in 2000. Wawatay went on to premiere at the Firehall Arts Centre in Vancouver and garnered Penny a 2002 Vancouver Jessie Richardson Theatre Award for Outstanding Original Play and the People's Choice Favourite New Play Award at the 2001 Vancouver Playwrights' Theatre Festival. Penny spent this past summer in Regina, SK writing six episodes for the Aboriginal television series, Moccasin Flats (Big Soul Productions), which will air on APTN in November and Showcase in spring 2004. She is currently writing the film adaptation of Wawatay with the support of Telefilm Canada and the Canada Council. Penny would like to thank Native Earth, Yvette Nolan, Linda Moore and this talented cast and crew for breathing life into "Bingo." Hy Hy.

Playwright In Residence Dawn Dumont examines sexism and sexuality, and the role of a community in either preventing or abetting sexual assault in this provocative new play. Stalker first appeared in Buddies In Bad Times' Rhubarb Festival of New Works in February 2003.

A couple of cousins hitting the pow-wow trail find themselves wondering what they actually believe about tradition, spirituality, and The Gap as a corporate sponsor. A clever biting comedy about who we are.

Thelma is an artist who makes a living by producing dreamcatchers. Rock, Toad and Grandmother Raven work and play together to help lead Thelma back through the past, so she can go forward, reclaiming her art and her life. A multi-disciplinary piece about rocks, faith and remembering.

8:30pm - Red Mother by Muriel Miguel (NY)
Founding member of Spiderwoman Theatre Muriel Miguel returns to Weesageechak with her one-woman show Red Mother. Book of interest by Viggo Mortensen

Viggo Mortensen (best known as Aragorn in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy) who plays Frank Hopkins, a half Lakota in the upcoming Disney movie "Hidalgo" (written by John Fusco [author of "Thunderheart"]) recently had a showing in Los Angeles of his art work, which contains photographs that he took of people depicting Ghostdancers performing this arcane sacred ceremony. Viggo became close to the Lakota people while filming the movie HIDALGO (shot on location in South Dakota) and is donating a portion of the proceeds from his book "Miyelo" to the Sue Anne Big Crow Boys & Girls club on the Oglala Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota.

Windtalkers (8 p.m.-10:15 p.m., Showtime) - This 2002 war movie is based on the true story of Navajos who used their native language as a code to help U.S. forces in the Pacific during World War II. Adam Beach stars as one of the "windtalkers," and Nicolas Cage is a Marine sergeant assigned to protect them - and to make sure none of them is taken alive by the Japanese. Extremely violent war scenes would seem to rule this one out for family viewing.

First impressions of Edge Of America

I talked to a friend in the US yesterday. It was shaking her world that us Norwegians would get to see a movie by Chris Eyre before her! I have to say I very much appreciate that we for once got something first!

OK, on to the impressions. I'll try to avoid spoiling the movie for you guys...

First of all, you guys know me. I don't like war movies, and I prefer movies set in present times. I don't watch all the movies I tape. I tell myself I will one day, but there are lots of movies with Native Americans that I never get around to watching. I'll fast forward through them while making a VCD or making captures, but won't sit down and watch them on the TV. And there are few movies I want to see more than once.

I knew when the end credits rolled that I'd want to see this one again. I was paying attention, and I'm still sure I missed some of the more subtle cultural digs.

If I were to analyze the movie, I'd say it's about overcoming culture clash. This Black guy comes to the rez, and he didn't choose to come there by chance. I think he believed that since Indians were also a minority, then he'd be welcomed by open arms, and would be able to help them. The reality is somewhat different. I won't spoil more of that plot here, I'll just tell you that Geraldine Keams' character had a one liner that had me laughing out loud! I doubt many Europeans would get it, though. Chris had Irene's character explain it afterwards, so that more people would get it.

You know, by now I've lost the 'fresh eyes' that most Europeans have. Although I'm viewed as an outsider by Indians, I no longer view these movies the way an outsider would. And by now it's too ingrained, so I can't tell for sure how someone who's totally uneducated about Indian ways would see such a movie.

A girlfriend called when the movie was almost over - about 15 minutes. I told her I was watching an important movie, and I'd call her back. She said, OK, I'll watch Hallmark too. She totally didn't understand the ending. She would have had she seen the whole film, of course. But I still think this is a world so totally removed from most European, I think there's a lot we'll miss. I get the most obvious in-jokes, but I still sense there are some that I'm missing.

Although this film is based on a true story, it feels fictionalized in that the structure is supporting a moral. As we've seen with Smoke Signals, this film has a moral that's at times tightly woven throughout the movie. It's about understanding, about growing, and about changing. About two, or maybe even three cultures clashing, and the positive that can come from that - in the end. Chris has injected some very important points, telling us what the movie is about, but I won't use his words here, I'll save the precise words for when you see it yourself...

A friend sent a message to my cell phone the moment the film was over. This guy is a serious Indian film buff. Here's what he wrote (translated): 'An incredibly wonderful and good film'.

I know some of you are especially waiting to hear how they can expect to see their favorite actors, so I jotted down some thoughts:

* This is a drama, but Wes Studi's character is providing comic relief. This is the way I like to see him! I'm sure his fans will concur!
* Geraldine Keams is a very serious character, but still manages to generate quite a few laughs, and never at her expense.
* Cody Lightning will make you do a double take. I've never seen him like this, and I don't think you have either! Think Victor does Thomas...
* Eddie Spears is the heart throb alibi in this one
* I think we'll see a lot more of Delanna Studi. That was quite a complicated role she tackled there.
* This is the first role I've seen Misty Upham in where I've been able to see her potential. She and Delanna had the most meaty roles of the girls, and they were also the only ones I'd heard of before. The others were unknown to me, but I'll try to get more info on them.

One of Chris Eyre's newest movies is premiering on Hallmark in Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden and Denmark) this week!

On the Hallmark website, they've entitled it ON THE EDGE, but in my local TV magazine, the title was the correct one: EDGE OF AMERICA. It's possible they'll air it in other Hallmark markets, so check your local listings for both titles. Hallmark are sloppy with titles, and this isn't the first one they've mangled like this.

This one must have been completed just weeks ago, because this is the first I've heard of it being shown anywhere. It's slated to air on Showtime in the US soon. They've locked me out from the Showtime website since my IP address reveals I'm in Europe, so I can't verify if anything's happening right now with that... Can I ask for you guys to keep an eye out and e-mail me immediately if you see something about that?

The City of Colton cordially invites you to attend!

Municipal leaders, won an overwhelming O.K. from City Council, have corralled a site for a festival celebrating Wyatt Earp. The City of Colton was established in 1875 with Nicholas Earp and his sons, Wyatt and Virgil, serving in local law enforcement. Nicholas Earp was elected Justice of the Peace while Virgil was Colton's first elected Marshall, Morgan is buried here. Colton is becoming more aware of their historic significance and the Earp family is an important part of that heritage.

The City of Colton is proud to host the 5th Annual Wyatt Earp, Old West Days. This is the first time the City has the ability to host this event. Old West Days presents an educational, historical walk though the events of our nation in the 19th Century. Old West Days gives re-enactors a venue where they can put together a complete staging of their chosen field of historic preference, thus showing the public how each occurrence of the 19th Century evolved into creating this great nation of ours.

The EARP Society is a non-profit corporation who is presenting Wyatt Earp, Old West Days. The festival will be held:

Friday thru Sunday, October 24-26, 2003.

Friday, October 24th has been specifically designated as Old West School Days, in order to enlighten students attending the event as a class study. Students and adults have the opportunity to meet and speak with President Lincoln; Generals Lee & Grant; witness a Civil War Battle re-enactment; Mountain Man rendezvous; Indian Era Calvary; stunt show and stage coach rides. A realistic 1800's western town will house a mercantile; town hall; "chuck wagon" food vendors; old fashioned saloon; authentic clothing vendors and a real jail.

Saturday will showcase a S.A.S.S. Cowboy Shooting Competition and the California Mounted Shooters, with the evening ending with an authentic Civil War Cotillion Ball; the Butterfield Stage Cowboy Ball and on Sunday morning Cowboy Church.

Other re-enactments will include Tombstone re-created; the gun fight at the O.K. corral; fast draw competition; charity action shooting; 'sutlers' row; Indian set up and a 'spaghetti western' stunt show.

This event has been created by the EARP Society to educate and preserve our nation's history and to raise money for charitable organizations within the local community. The last two years monies were raised for the Roy Rogers-Dale Evans Happy Trails Foundation for Severely Abused Children. This year donations will go toward Colton Cares Childcare Center and the Historic Carnegie Library Museum.

Wyatt Earp, Old West Days will also feature Museum exhibits from local, county and state Museums as well as showcasing Western artists

Spam blacklist problem

For those of you using SpamPal, there's a problem with one of the blacklists. The new beta update will fix the problem, or you can disable the osirusoft lists yourself if you can't download the update for some reason. Check the site for info on what to do.

Spamassasin also uses this list, so update there too.

I got a lot of false positives suddenly, and had already wondered about that particular list before I heard that there had been an announcement that the list should no longer be used.

When I checked one of my old webmail accounts today (wish I could delete it, actually), it was overflowing with viruses. I'm sure mail was bouncing. I didn't think it would collect any viruses, but was wrong.

It doesn't take much for Yahoo or Hotmail accounts to get full after the virus plague this week, so please go and check yours now and clear out the junk, otherwise your friends may not be able to reach you!

Confirmed cases of mail not reaching me

I've had at least two confirmed cases of e-mail not reaching me. I'm most likely not alone in that predicament. I've also had mail bounce back to me because it was undeliverable, but suspect there's mail that never reached it's intended recipient and no notice that it didn't.

Because of the virus problems, mail can disappear without a trace, it seems. Oh, actually, those two confirmed cases of mail not reaching me - both were from users on AOL.

- then it's not from me.

Sobig - one of the viruses that's spreading now, will falsify the 'from' address, based on what it finds in your cache (from pages you've recently surfed).

I got an e-mail yesterday from a guy who wondered why he'd gotten an e-mail from me, and when he checked my homepage, that address was marked 'spamtrap'. That spamtrap address is the only one on my site that hasn't been encoded, so it's the only one the virus can get at easily these days, unless there's an e-mail from me in the inbox.

He'd gotten the virus-infected mail from somebody who'd surfed my site.

So please remember when you receive a virus infected mail from someone - it's not really from them. Check the headers, and you'll find the IP address of the actual origin - except the e-mail address won't be there, so I doubt you'll be able to guess whose computer is actually infected.

We all have to take care and try to avoid being infected, and try to get the computer cured if we got stung. I saw a news story that the Sobig virus leaves a back door open for spammers to use, so DO get your computer fixed if you got infected!

Turtle Gals Performance Ensemble was founded in 1999 with the commitment to bringing Native women's stories to the stage.

Veteran theatre artists, Jani Lauzon, Monique Mojica and Michelle St. John have won over audiences and critics with their first original play, THE SCRUBBING PROJECT – a courageous exploration of racism, tradition and memory, using vaudeville as a madcap metaphor for navigating identity.

Hi,

My name is Annie, and I own the NativeCelebs website.

People send me press releases quite often, and although I've tried for maybe a year to get people to post them on a website instead of relying solely on e-mail, it doesn't seem to work... :-(

So I've been trying to figure out a way to be able to post all those press releases in an elegant way. When I realized what a powerful tool a blog is, I decided to try this out for that specific purpose. So I'll be posting a good deal of press releases here. Eventually I'll delete the posts, but I don't know how much I'll get around to pruning. Bottom line - the press releases won't stick around here forever.

Issue number two for me, is that it's hard to use long links in my newsletter - and newspaper stories usually come with very long links (URL, if you're picky).

So I'll post those here too - at least while I'm testing this out.

No promises on how often I'll post. This is an experiment for now...

Oh, and remember: When I post links and press releases - I did NOT write them. I might write a sentence or two to present a link, but I don't necessarily agree with everything in those press releases or news stories.
